Pieter Postma appeals to the pioneer in all of us through his art. He touches the part of our soul that wants to discover unknown lands, to learn how to fly or to find new ways of expressing ourselves. He inspires us to take a journey, either inside our own soul or far, far away. We sense from Pieter's work that he is fascinated by travellers -- those who travel through space and or time and explore new worlds or those who look deep inside their own hearts for the truth. The theme of exploring unknown territories, or new sensations, runs through all of his art. He reminds us of the joy in discovering a new sensation for the first time and what it feels like to be a young child stumbling upon an ant colony or seeing a school of minnows in a pond. As passengers along with him on his journey, we sense the rush of adrenaline of the traveller. Pieter's art speaks directly the viewer. It's accessible for anyone who takes the time to understand the concept beneath it and enjoyable even for those who do not. There are layers beneath the beautiful exteriors: the art harkens back to the young boy's dream, the refugee's search for a better life or the explorer's push for discovery. Pieter's sculptures are aesthetically pleasing. They can be shiny, use striking colour, symmetry and form. Other times, they are startling and out of context. They make the viewer stop and think about what is happening. The scenes are as if from another dimension that we as visitors have accidentally stumbled upon. His work also hints at the alienation we can all feel, as if our surroundings are suddenly new and all the rules have changed.

I often long to move on to a new era or a different space. A place that isn't all too defined. Even before I started making photos I looked for these places. It is a returning theme in all of my work it is about raw spaces that are just there for a moment of time, but feel very tangible to me. Photos of abandoned urban places. Abstract colored levels, movements of light, recorded by my camera. Solidified paths of energy, data and traffic. And primordial landscape. All these photographs have some sense of desolation, but also represent romance, adventure, and escaping the mundane.

Milan Gies: Man and his longing are central to my work. During my education at theatre school my fascination for open, real contact originated. An important condition for that is being able to be vulnerable. A colour that may be spotted on our palette, specific to man. The longing for something, my quest, has become the theme of my work. The images wherein I behold and register man are autobiographical: I am driven by an inescapable desire to want to mirror my self. I prefer to work during a longer period with one model, to thus come to an authentic contact, and cause a deeper layer in my portraits. Stalled movements Inner movements

Stimulated by music, pictures and newspaper-articles, Riette Wanders mixes social, cultural and personal elements into a number of associations. She uses these associations to create a sinister and peculiar world, translated in a direct and intensive manner. Isolation, delerium, extremities as well as humor and self-mockery are recurring themes.

About Marjolein Edwall: In December 2004 Marjolein Edwall (Amsterdam 1963) graduated summa cum laude from the autonomous track in photography at the Amsterdam Photoacademy. She specialized in studio photography about political topics. World news, the media, catastrophes and science are her favorite topics, raising questions about imprinting, memory and identity. For example, Edwall, of Dutch-German and Chinese descent, portrayed prosecuted Chinese Falun Gong practitioners who have fled to the Netherlands. This work was commissioned for the Test-Portal international art festival in 2005, and has been shown twice at the Noorderlicht Photo Festival in Groningen.
My photographs are a manifestation of my inner image bank. A part of these images has been built up by following the news. As a photographer I have a visual hunger; being human, I hunger for knowledge about the other. The other and I have commonalities, where the universal becomes a self-portrait of my inner being. That being is obviously somber in mood, and deeply interested in suffering. The only way I can express this constellation is by staging, preferably using the closest fellow human as a model for the human being in the disaster in the news: my husband. The questions I ask myself are: if the image culture builds up my inner image bank, how does that influence my identity? And if you try to imagine what somebody experiences, can you then approach the truth?

My artistic research refers to the inherent value of the lost/found object, as well as the plastic qualities of what is found in the public space, objects generally left as garbage on the streets in unconscious 'compositions'. In my view these are sculptures, installations created by people busy only with getting rid of their daily litter. What fascinates me is the natural beauty of all things man-made, and I use diverse techniques to share this experience: three-dimensional paintings, wall paintings, photographs, installations, posters, adhesives, text and graffiti, in public or private spaces. I create images by recycling these objects, or just by documenting (photographing) what I find.
When (re)constructing these garbage installations, my ambition is to design a situation where all things retake their place in the world, and by doing so propose an aesthetic and ethical discussion. Renata de Andrade's her works have been exhibited at MAM - Museum of Modern Art (Sao Paulo), Museum Victor Meitelles (Florianopolis), Ceara Museum of Contemporary Art (Fortaleza), Contemporary Art Museum of Ribeirao Preto, Art Museum of Londrina. In The Netherlands, among others, at Gallery Cokkie Snoei, Mirta Demare Gallery (both in Rotterdam). Renata was nominated for the UniversidArte Award 2007, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; was granted the Tijl Fonds, Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, Amsterdam; and has received 4 times a 2 years stipendium from the Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture, known in the Netherlands as Fonds BKVB.
